Ideas for Celebrating the Feast of St. Therese of Lisieux (delayed I know! haha) and the Feast of the Guardian Angels

I was supposed to post these ideas for St. Therese's feast day yesterday but didn't get to as my mom and I went to visit my cousin who just gave birth, and give some breastfeeding support to her. After that, we went grocery shopping with the kids. It was a very rainy Saturday in Manila yesterday, and I hope everyone's coping with the typhoon well. Let's keep praying for those badly affected though, and still in flooded areas!

Anyway, here are some ideas for St. Therese's Feast Day, as re-posted from other wonderful Catholic moms' blogs and Catholic websites! (It's never too late to celebrate and teach our kids about St. Therese, who is one of my personal favorites, as we sought her intercession when I was pregnant with our 2 kids on mission! That's why we named our first daughter, Alyssa Therese :-) hehe.)

P.S. Please also keep reading to the end for ideas on celebrating the Feast of the Guardian Angels (Oct 2)! :-)

Happy Feast Day St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael!

I started off this day with a reflection about St. Joseph and Mama Mary, which was inspired by some videos I watched with the kids. What a fitting way to start the day!
The Three Archangels with Tobias by Francesco Botticini from
friendsofart.net
Today, on Michaelmas, besides celebrating the feast day of St. Michael the Archangel, along with Saints Gabriel and Raphael, the other archangels, in various ways, let's pray for our families, and all families everywhere. Let us especially pray for protection from the evil one and for stronger families built on the ROCK of Christ.

Here are some prayers to get us started from a website about St. Michael:

Warning: Monster Mama alert!

I was a very, very, very mean mom to Tim yesterday. Taking from the words of fellow homeschool mom Jen, I was a "monster mama."! Literally! (Believe me, I won't describe what happened in details for fear of you not reading my blog anymore! haha!)

I was so distressed by what happened that I posted about it on the ROCKERs Facebook page:

was a really really really really really mean Monster Mama today. Praying for the grace of healing, forgiveness, patience and selective memory loss (for my kids). Haay, pray for me please fellow ROCKERs! This Teacher Mama lost it today! Huhuhuhu

Why I believe in natural family planning

Natural family planning? What’s that? And does it really work?”

These are probably some of the most common reactions or statements we get when people ask us how we spaced our two kids (Tim is turning 5 in October and Rysse just turned 2 last July). Those who are already in the know though can testify that NFP is the best way to go when it comes to family planning.

Our kids are products of NFP, just like Umbert. ;-)
What is natural family planning (NFP)?
Wikipedia defines NFP in the following way:

Natural family planning (NFP) is a term referring to the family planning methods approved by the Roman Catholic Church. In accordance with the Church's requirements for sexual behavior in keeping with its philosophy of the dignity of the human person, NFP excludes the use of other methods of birth control.

Parents for Eternal Life

I recently read an article entitled “The Teaching of the Catholic Church on Home Schooling – Parents for Eternal Life” by Jesuit priest Fr. John Hardon, and the following paragraph really struck me:

“...what they (children) mainly need is to know why God made them; why they are on earth at all; why they are in this world; that they are here in this life in order to prepare and train themselves for the world to come. In a word, children are to be taught that their short stay here in time is only a preparation for the world that will never end. They are to be trained for heaven.”

The Teaching of the Catholic Church on Home Schooling - Parents for Eternal Life

by Fr. John A. Hardon, S.J.
(from http://www.therealpresence.org/archives/Education/Education_028.htm

Why should we ask the question, “What is the teaching of the Catholic Church on Home Schooling?”

The reason is obvious: Because we are Roman Catholics!

We know how much emphasis the Church had placed for generations on Catholic education, and for generations people came to practically equate Catholic education with institutional education. Home schooling as home education had not been the focus of the Church’s magisterial teaching until fairly recent times. We might say it was taken for granted.

But no more. The rise of global secularism on every level of modern life has placed the Church on guard. Her authoritative stress is now more than ever on the role of parents as the primary teachers of their children.

The most recent and authoritative ecclesiastical documentation on this subject is in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, issued by Pope John Paul II on the very day of the five hundredth anniversary of the discovery of the New World by Christopher Columbus.

The key word that stands out in the Church’s teaching on home schooling is the word “primary”.

Parents’ responsibility to educate their children is primary. This means, it is their first responsibility. It is primordial; it is inalienable; it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute.

It is critically important to understand what the Church means when she says that parents have the primary right and duty to teach their children.

Ways to celebrate the Assumption of Mary (from Catholic Icing)!

As usual, Lacy over at Catholic Icing has some wonderful ideas on how to make the Feast of the Assumption of Mary meaningful and fun for our kids. (I didn't have time to prepare for any of these - grrr! - but I will try to at least print out some coloring sheets for the kids to commemorate this wonderful feast day. *But I don't have a printer pala! hahaha.* Maybe I'll go over to my parents' place! hehe. Happy Feast of the Assumption everyone! ;-) Mama Mary, we love you! Pray for us!

Anyway, here is Lacy's post:

Assumption of Mary- Are You Ready to Celebrate?

The Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary is on August 15. FYI- Jesus Ascended into heaven. Mary was Assumed into heaven. Hence the "Ascension of Jesus" and the "Assumption of Mary". Guess Jesus could do it on his own, and Mary was abducted alien style. Ok, only kidding about the 'alien abduction' part. :-)

Here are some ways to have fun in celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary! (Man, what a mouth full!)

Who loves free Catholic coloring pages? I do! And these ones
from St. John's Catholic Church are some of my favorites!
This coloring page of Mary's Assumption is just beautiful.
Over at Catholic and Loving It, they made this great
Marian Cake for celebrating the Assumption of Mary.
If you're looking for food ideas, you could try
Also, here are some ideas from my Ascension of Jesus post. I love this
jello dish because not only is it clouds for the assumption, but
it's blue to symbolize Mary, too! :-)
I wish I would have had the time to pull off a craft for this one- maybe next year. Anyway, enjoy the coloring page and say good bye to your diet for this one!

Educating for Eternity

"Of course, our most important goal is to educate our children for eternity. How? By living and being what we want our children to be. We must be truthful, brave, forgiving, thoughtful, faithful, virtuous, self-disciplined, kind and cheerful if we want our children to be! Our Faith is caught, not taught... we can't give what we don't have. Overwhelming? Not when we remember that a baby learns to walk by falling! God measures our effort and appreciates every little thing we do for love of Him. He invites us to keep "walking" and grow more in love with Him each day."

- Introductory page, Educating for Eternity: Kindergarten, Catholic Heritage Curricula

This made me cry. I have been unkind, unforgiving, thoughtless, and angry a lot lately, especially to Tim. Lord, thank You for the reminder. We are educating for eternity. And no matter how many times I may fall, You will always be there to help me "walk." Please be with us as we begin our homeschool journey for real very, very soon.  Amen.

Catholic Heritage Curricula: Homeschooling is a Gift!

Catholic Heritage Curricula Daily Lesson Plans - FINALLY HERE! Thank You Lord!
I am so overwhelmed by God's amazing grace and provision!

Earlier today, Tim and I were able to get a long-awaited package from the US - it contained the Daily Lesson Plans from Catholic Heritage Curricula and Dr. Seuss and Starfall books - all sent with love, as a gift, from a fellow Catholic Filipina mom whom I had never met in person, but only got to know through, what else, Facebook! I don't remember clearly how we came to be FB friends, but I thank God that we did! Honey (and her family, of course) have been a great blessing to us, and has provided a lot of homeschooling tips for me.
With the package.. so excited!
We LOVE books!
I haven't gotten a chance to read through all of the lesson plans from CHC, but I am so encouraged by its "Welcome" page of sorts, which starts with this at the very top of the page:
+
J.M.J.

I was so delighted to see it, because a fellow HS mom, who is using Kolbe, used "JMJ" with me before in one  of our e-mail correspondences about homeschooling. She said the people behind Kolbe use it all the time, and it stands for Jesus.Mary.Joseph.

I'm so psyched that CHC uses it too! J.M.J!

I also like the part in the "Welcome" letter that says:

"Education is much, much more than the subjects you study in a formal way. It is the sum total of your family life. Everything you do as a family affects the children."
(Reverend John Hardon)

Whew! Time to really pray even harder about how God wants us to mold our kids, esp. through homeschooling. In case you were wondering, yes, we will be using CHC, along with Mater Amabilis, and other free resources  from the Net. Still trying to get organized though, esp. in terms of books. :-) I hope to get some materials from Math-U-See somehow. Plus some books about the Philippines.

I am trying not to be pressured though. I believe in the adage "better late than early," and I don't think starting homeschooling just before Tim turns 5 (we plan to start in September, and his birthday is in October) counts as "late," at least not by most homeschoolers' standards.

But after today, I can really, truly say again with all my heart - "God truly provides! He is good all the time!"

On being PRO-GOD, PRO-FAMILY, PRO-COUNTRY and PRO-LIFE: July 25 State of the Soul of the Nation Address

I have written here before about being Pro-Life. Being a pro-life family, we strive to be up-to-date with all that is happening around us, especially here in the Philippines, where bills that are pro-contraception, sex education for young children, and divorce, are being pushed into legalization. Many people think that it is only the Catholic church that is "waging this war" but actually, many Filipinos of other religions also agree about being pro-life.

Groups like Pro-Life Philippines are trying their best to gather these Filipinos, and have been able to do so in the past, like in the Filipinos Unite under God for Life Rally last March 25. This Monday, July 25, there is another event aimed at uniting Filipinos who are for life.

I am sharing this post  below taken from my other blog on faith, family and financial literacy (and everything in between! hehe) here in case there are readers who don't know about it yet.

Look what I "discovered" on Facebook the other day. Pro-Life Philippines Foundation is organizing a State of the Soul of the Nation address, along with other religious groups (Catholics, Christians and Muslims) on July 25. GMA News actually published a story about it last week. If you aren't doing anything this Monday, I hope you could come and attend this event. For love of God, country and LIFE. God bless (and save!) the Philippines!

IMAGE FOR SSONA copy.jpg
A coalition of pro-lifers is organizing a massive delegation of inter-religious groups to release a STATE OF THE SOUL OF THE NATION ADDRESS on Monday, July 25.

This event is dedicated to commemorating the 43rd Anniversary of the Humanae Vitae which re-affirms the traditional teaching of the Catholic Church regarding married love, responsible parenthood, and lawful and unlawful ways of regulating birth.

The said celebration will coincide with the second State of the Nation Address of President Benigno Simeon Aquino III. Thus, it is in these momentous events that we deem it necessary to hold an activity that calls for the restoration of moral integrity in our country especially on issues that largely affect the family and the sanctity of human life.

As an opening salvo, there will be a celebration of the Holy Mass to be officiated by Most Rev. Bishop Broderick Pabillo, DD as main celebrant with renowned healing priest Rev. Fr. Fernando Suarez giving the Homily inside the Sanctuario De San Jose Parish Church in Greenhills, San Juan at 9:00 AM. Simultaneous with the mass will be the worship of different evangelical groups at Club Filipino.

After which, a silent march to Club Filipino will be held by those that attended the Mass culminating with a short program to be led by the various heads of the inter-faith alliance to be held at the Corazon Aquino Kalayaan Hall at the Club Filipino in Greenhills, San Juan City. A consolidated statement written by the Congress of the Faithful addressing the need to unite Filipinos in rekindling the fading status of morality in governance will be read and will be conveyed to President Aquino himself during the activities.

If you have more questions, kindly contact the Pro-Life Philippines Office at 734-9425 or at 733-7027 or text them at 09192337783.

Freebie Friday: Free Catholic Vacation Bible School

(When I wrote this post, it was still Friday night.. but it was already Saturday when I finished! LOL!!)

This is a repost from one of my all-time favorite Catholic mom bloggers, Lacy, of Catholic Icing. I tell ya, when GOD poured out Catholic creativity into His created human beings, Lacy must have soaked up a lot of it. Living proof of how the Holy Spirit works to reach others, even through "simple" stuff like arts and crafts!

Anyway, I was on Facebook a while ago and saw a post from one of my homeschool mommy friends (more like MENTOR!) in the US about Catholic Vacation Bible School in their parish and I was jea-lous! Made me wish there was something like that here in the Philippines.

Then, lo and behold, while researching for freebies for this week's post, I saw Lacy's post about Catholic Vacation Bible School (VBS). Thank You God! :-)

Without further ado, here it is. FREE Catholic Vacation Bible School from Holy Heroes! Woohooooo! Anyone want to join me here in the Philippines so our kids can do this together? Let me know ASAP please - teachermamatina@gmail.com. :-) Be blessed!

Homeschooling From A Dad's Perspective

My favorite lines from this homeschooling dad's honest, witty blog post (which I think ALL homeschoolers, wannabe-homeschoolers, curious-about-homeschooling-people should read!):

"
And all (our kids) do well on the standardized testing for what it’s worth.
..your kids aren’t going to turn out stupid cause of homeschooling, they may for other reasons :)."

"But even if we choose to send our kids to school we are still ultimately the ones who have to answer for how they turn out. And I’m not just talking about how smart they are, what college they get accepted to or how much their future jobs pay. We are talking about what kind of people they become and the future of their souls."

"...it (homeschooling) has to be a mutual decision; it’s not going to work if both aren’t in agreement, it's way too demanding for that."

Reading this blog post, I found myself nodding lots of times and laughing out loud occasionally. Most of all, I found myself thanking the LORD that Anthony is one supportive husband and homeschool dad! :-) So blessed to have you honey!

Below is the entire post from Sardonic Catholic Dad (who is a dad of TWELVE! My gosh! And all were/are being homeschooled! See, anything is possible with God! *Especially for all you homeschool skeptics out there - you know who you are! hehe).

Should we homeschool or not? We get that question from time to time. While I can’t make that decision for you, here are a few thoughts from one dad’s point of view.

Homeschooling is a lot cheaper than Catholic schools but more than public schools. Catholic schools are around (US$) 5k for k-8th and 10k+ for 9th-12th grades in our area (your results may vary). So 13 years of schooling X 11 kids X $5,000-$10,000 = Are you out of your freaking mind? So Catholic schools aren’t even an option for our family. Homeschooling costs as little as few hundred dollars a year. Especially if you build up a nice family library.

I’m not that impressed with the Catholic schools anyways. Maybe the education is better than at public schools (I hope so for the $$$ they charge) but the behavior of the kids doesn’t seem much better than of the public school kids. Not that homeschool kids are all little angels either (Tina: I can so relate! haha). Sometimes I can't tell any difference behavior wise. It basically comes down to the parents.

Plus a lot of the Catholic schools around here are Catholic in name only. Friends of ours are constantly complaining about them and taking their kids out and either homeschooling them or sending them to the public schools. And if they aren’t complaining about the costs or lack of true Catholic teaching, then they are complaining about the 2-3 hours of homework in the evenings. Heck you can be finished homeschooling in 3 hours a day. Plus you get the added bonus of no PTA meetings or teacher/parent conferences.

As parents we are the ‘primary educators’ (in quotes cause I hate that term) of our kids. In other words we are responsible for them. Not the government or some paid professional (although there are lots of great teachers out there). But even if we choose to send our kids to school we are still ultimately the ones who have to answer for how they turn out. And I’m not just talking about how smart they are, what college they get accepted to or how much their future jobs pay. We are talking about what kind of people they become and the future of their souls. It’s a huge responsibility. One best not pondered too much if you want to sleep at night.

For Sam and me the decision was easy and it was made even before we were married. And it has to be a mutual decision; it’s not going to work if both aren’t in agreement, it's way too demanding for that. But so far it has turned out great for us. The 2 oldest have each graduated HS 2 years early. The first is finishing up her second year at the local community college and will be transferring to a four year college in the fall. The second is at a pre-seminary and will be attending a regular seminary in the fall. Each has done very well on their SAT’s and in their college course work. The other kids are all on track to finish 1 or 2 years early. And all do well on the standardized testing for what it’s worth. So your kids aren’t going to turn out stupid cause of homeschooling, they may for other reasons :).

Don’t get me wrong it’s not a piece of cake. As husbands we must support our wives. I’m assuming that the wives are the main ones doing the teaching. If you as a couple decide this is the way to go then you have to support your wife as best you can.

No coming home from work and complaining that the house is messy and dinner isn’t ready – guilty of that myself. You have to be willing to put up with a little more mess around the house, a little less fancy cooking, more housework for yourself and helping out with the schooling when needed. And yes that can be annoying at times, tough, deal with it.

There may be days when your wives will question the decision – they may question it every hour of the day and curse your name for agreeing to it. But they probably do that for other well deserved reasons already so what’s one more? Just be there for them and be supportive. Sometimes they just need to vent a little bit about why little Johnny at age 8 still can’t read, eats paste and boogers and exposes himself in public. While the neighbor's 8 year-old at the swanky private school is fluent in French and can solve quadratic equations. Don’t worry I’m sure your son will be able to whip theirs in sports at least.

My kids seem to enjoy it for the most part. They complain on occasion but they complain about everything on occasion. The industrious ones are working on their school right after breakfast and are done before noon. They then have lots of play/free time, after chores are done of course. The lazier ones might still be doing school work when I get home from work (you know who you are). But none of them hate it. At least I think they don’t hate it…I’m afraid to ask.

What about HS you ask? What about it? Lots of parents school the kids through the 8th grade and then put their kids in a high school. Others school them all through high school. We happen to use tutors. Our HS age kids go to tutors 1 or 2 days a week. You are an adult, you will figure out what’s best.

So whether you are doing it for spiritual, social or educational reasons; or all 3 like we are, I don’t think you will regret trying it out. It’s pretty darn cool when your little one sits down to read you a book and it’s your lovely bride who has taught them how to read. Anyway the schools will always take the little darling back…I think.

Honey, I don’t say it enough. I love you and appreciate all you do. Especially schooling the little balls of sunshine.

Instant Homeschool Lesson for Divine Mercy Sunday

Our instant "lesson" for Saturday was based on the feast of the Divine Mercy.. We are unschooling now and I just thought of doing this before the kids had lunch. The other day we did "A" is for Ark and did an Ark artwork and read Noah's Ark and other books about listening to God and obeying.

Saturday's "lesson" was "B" is for Blessed (I tried to connect the lesson to the beatification of Pope John Paul II somehow). Aside from the artwork we did (which was a hit with the kids, thank You Lord for divine inspiration!), Tim practiced writing his uppercase and lowercase A's and B's, numbers 1 and 2. (He is not so into writing actually. I don't want to push him so much either!)

We also read about The Lost Sheep from The Beginner's Bible for Toddlers (I related it to being Blessed because Jesus always looks for us because of His great love for us), and the book Thank You God for My Two Feet. I had other books I planned to read but Tim said he was already hungry, so I let him and Rysse have lunch already. (Note to self: Start planning ahead, and homeschool earlier in the morning! :-)

I sure hope the kids learn from these "instant" lessons somehow! And that more than these lessons, they learn how to love the Lord with all their heart! I also pray that I will grow more in patience, understanding, kindness and discipline.

Jesus King of Mercy, we trust in You! Blessed John Paul II, pray for us! Thank you for showing us that life is precious, and that children are a gift from God! :-)

Pope John Paul II: Children Are the Future of a Nation

"I wish to express the joy that we all find in children, the springtime of life, the anticipation of the future history of each of our present earthly homelands. No country on earth, no political system can think of its own future otherwise than through the image of these new generations that will receive from their parents the manifold heritage of values, duties and aspirations of the nation to which they belong and of the whole human family. Concern for the child, even before birth, from the first moment of conception and then throughout the years of infancy and youth, is the primary and fundamental test of the relationship of one human being to another. And so, what better wish can I express for every nation and for the whole of mankind, and for all the children of the world than a better future in which respect for human rights will become a complete reality throughout the third millennium, which is drawing near?"

~ Pope John Paul II, excerpt from Familiaris Consortio ~
